Oslo Airport to a Fjord Cruise: Transfer Times, Tickets, Logistics

Oslo Gardermoen (OSL) to the dock at Tjuvholmen runs about an hour door to door: 19 minutes on Flytoget to Oslo S, then a tram or an 18-minute walk. From Sandefjord Torp (TRF) the bus alone is 1 hour 35 minutes. Leave 90 minutes between a scheduled landing and your cruise with hand luggage only, 2 hours 15 minutes if you checked a bag. Small bags come aboard; suitcases stay at the hotel.

First-day-in-Oslo cruises are common. Land at 11:00, on the boat at 14:00, swim stop at 15:30, back at the hotel by 17:00, dinner at 19:00. Gardermoen is well connected and the dock is eighteen minutes' walk from Oslo S, so the whole day runs in one direction: airport, train, boat, dinner.

What follows is the practical version. Which train, which ticket, where the suitcase goes, and how much slack to leave.

From Oslo Gardermoen

OSL sits 47 kilometres north of the city. Every train into Oslo leaves from the same platform on the lower level under the terminal.

Fares as of July 2026. Vy's longer-distance InterCity services also stop at Oslo S and are worth it only if your hotel is east or south of the centre.

Oslo S to the Tjuvholmen dock is 1.6 kilometres:

• Walk. 18 minutes down Karl Johans gate or along the harbour promenade. Pleasant in decent weather.
• Tram 12 or 13. Off at Aker Brygge, four minutes from there on foot. A zone 1 single is NOK 46, a 24-hour ticket NOK 137 (adult, July 2026, from Ruter's fare page; Ruter changes fares on the third Sunday in January).
• Taxi. Five to eight minutes. Worth it with luggage.

Airport to dock lands at 50 to 65 minutes depending on the connection. Carry-on only and an on-time flight puts you on the boat 90 minutes after touchdown. Checked baggage adds 30 to 45.

From Sandefjord Torp

Torp is 110 kilometres south of Oslo, used by Ryanair and Wizz Air. Two ways north:

• Torp Ekspressen runs to Oslo Bus Terminal in 1 hour 35 minutes with no change, on departures timed to arriving flights. Fares are on the operator's ticket page.
• Train. A shuttle bus covers the five minutes from the terminal to Torp railway station, then Vy runs to Oslo S. Times and fares on vy.no. More comfortable than the bus.

Flying into Torp, allow two and a half hours from landing to the dock and book your cruise time around that.

Rygge is closed

Moss Airport Rygge has taken no civilian flights since 1 November 2016 and runs as a military base now. If an older guidebook points you there, nothing is flying in.

Luggage on the boat

The Cormate T28 has cabin storage for small bags: backpacks, cabin-size carry-ons, a couple of weekender duffels. Full-size suitcases do not fit sensibly. It is a 28-foot boat built around seven guests.

So drop the bags first. The central hotels (the Thief, Amerikalinjen, Grand, Continental, Sommerro) all take luggage before check-in time. Left-luggage lockers at Oslo S are the fallback if you are not staying in town. Order of operations on arrival day: airport, train, bags, dock. Add 30 to 45 minutes for the drop.

How much slack to leave

Ninety minutes between scheduled landing and cruise departure with hand luggage, 2 hours 15 minutes with a checked bag. What eats it:

• The flight. Delays into OSL are routine and half an hour goes fast.
• Passport control. A few minutes on an EU/EEA passport. Considerably longer from outside Schengen at the morning and late-afternoon peaks.
• The bag drop. Hotel reception queues at check-in time are their own event.
• We leave on time. The boat holds ten minutes for late guests. After that the route gets shortened, because the slot behind yours belongs to someone else.

Long-haul arrivals and anyone travelling with children should take the half-day version. Land in the morning, cruise in the afternoon. Land in the afternoon, cruise the next day.

If you are on a layover

We have taken layover guests before, passengers with six to nine hours between connections at OSL. It works with two conditions: check in for the onward flight before you leave the airport, and travel carry-on only.

The arithmetic: 60 minutes airport to dock, two hours on the water, 60 minutes back, 90 minutes pre-flight buffer. Five and a half hours. A seven-hour layover leaves a thin margin. Eight or nine is comfortable.

What happens on a 3-hour cruise has the shape of a typical trip.

Layover guests are some of my favourites. They land tired, take the express train, get on the boat, and spend the afternoon on the water instead of in a departure lounge. Then they fly out.

Where the boat is

We leave from Tjuvholmen, the small island at the western end of Aker Brygge. The meeting point is the dock outside Strandpromenaden 4, two minutes from The Thief and three from the Astrup Fearnley Museum. Look for the white Cormate T28 with the OSE logo on the side. We are usually fuelled and ready 20 minutes ahead of departure.

Your booking confirmation carries a Google Maps pin and the captain's phone number. Save both before you land. Mobile signal is full at the dock and across the inner fjord.
