From Oslo Gardermoen (OSL) to the dock at Tjuvholmen takes 50–60 minutes by airport express train (Flytoget) plus a 6-minute walk. From Sandefjord Torp (TRF) it is 1 hour 50 minutes by Torp Ekspressen bus and a 6-minute walk. Build at least 90 minutes of buffer between landing and your cruise time. Luggage: small bags fit on board, large cases stay at the hotel.
First-day-in-Oslo cruises are common. Land at 11:00, on the boat at 14:00, swim stop at 15:30, back to the hotel by 17:00, dinner at 19:00. It works because Oslo Gardermoen is one of the best-connected airports in Northern Europe and the Oslofjord starts where the city ends. The whole day fits in one direction: airport, train, boat, dinner.
This is the practical guide to making that work — which train, which ticket, where to leave the suitcase, and how much buffer to build between landing and boarding.
From Oslo Gardermoen (OSL)
OSL is the main airport, 47 kilometres north of central Oslo. Three rail options run from the airport into the city, all from the same platform on the lower level underneath the terminal:
- Flytoget (airport express). 19 minutes to Oslo S (Central Station). Departures every 10 minutes from 05:00 to midnight. NOK 240 one way, free WiFi, assigned seating not required, luggage racks. Buy at machines or via the Flytoget app.
- Vy regional train. 22–25 minutes to Oslo S. Slightly less frequent but cheaper at NOK 138 one way (with a Vy ticket; airport surcharge already included). Same platform as Flytoget. Same comfort. Use this if you have time and want to save NOK 100.
- Vy InterCity (longer-distance). Stops at Oslo S as part of routes to Halden, Skien, etc. Runs every 30–60 minutes. Same fare as the regional train. Worth it only if your hotel is east or south of central Oslo.
From Oslo S to Tjuvholmen dock: 1.6 km. Options:
- Walk: 18 minutes via Karl Johans gate or the harbour promenade. Pleasant in good weather.
- Tram (12 or 13): Get off at Aker Brygge stop, 4 minutes to the dock. NOK 39 single ticket via Ruter app.
- Taxi: 5–8 minutes, NOK 150–250 depending on traffic. Useful with luggage.
Total airport-to-dock time: 50–65 minutes door-to-door, depending on connection. If your flight lands on time and you are travelling carry-on only, you can be on the boat 90 minutes after touchdown. Add 30–45 minutes for checked baggage.
From Sandefjord Torp (TRF)
Torp is 110 kilometres south of Oslo. Used by Ryanair, Wizz Air, and KLM (some flights). Transfer to Oslo:
- Torp Ekspressen bus: 1 hour 50 minutes to Oslo Bus Terminal. NOK 330 one way. Departures coordinated with arriving flights.
- Train (via Torp station): 5-minute shuttle bus from terminal to Torp railway station, then 1 hour 50 minutes to Oslo S on Vy. NOK 200–240. More comfortable than the bus.
If you are flying into Torp, plan for a 2.5-hour airport-to-dock window minimum. Build it into your cruise booking time accordingly.
From Rygge (RYG)
Moss Airport Rygge handles a small number of seasonal charter flights. From Rygge railway station (3 km from terminal, shuttle bus connects), Vy trains reach Oslo S in 56 minutes. NOK 138 one way. Total transfer to dock: 90 minutes minimum.
Luggage on the boat
The Cormate T28 has cabin storage for small bags — backpacks, day-pack-size carry-ons, a couple of weekender duffels. Large suitcases (above carry-on size) do not fit sensibly. The boat is 28 feet, primarily for guests, not luggage.
Practical solution: drop your bags at your hotel before the cruise. Most central Oslo hotels (the Thief, Amerikalinjen, Grand, Continental, Sommerro) accept luggage deposit before check-in time. Tjuvholmen also has secure luggage storage at Storage 24 (Strandpromenaden 2, 3-minute walk from the dock) for NOK 90–150 per bag per day.
If you are landing and cruising on the same day, the order is: airport → train → drop bags → walk to dock. Add 30–45 minutes for the bag drop.
How much buffer to build
On the day of arrival we recommend at least 90 minutes between scheduled landing and cruise departure for carry-on travellers, 2 hours 15 minutes for checked baggage. Reasons:
- Late arrivals. Roughly 15% of flights into OSL run 30+ minutes late. Headwinds, ATC delays, or aircraft turnaround issues are routine.
- Border control. EU/EEA passport: 5–15 minutes. Non-Schengen: 20–45 minutes during peak (mornings, late afternoons).
- Bag drop and walk. Hotel check-in lines and luggage transfers eat time.
- The cruise sails on time. We hold the boat 10 minutes for late guests, no longer. After that the route is shortened.
If your flight is from outside Europe (long-haul, more variability) or you are travelling with kids, build a half-day buffer. Land in the morning, cruise in the afternoon. Land in the afternoon, cruise the next day.
If you have a layover
We have hosted layover guests before — passengers with 6 to 9 hours between connecting flights at OSL who used the window for a fjord cruise. It works with a catch: you must check in for the next flight before leaving the airport, and you need carry-on only. The math: 60 minutes airport-to-dock, 2 hours cruise, 60 minutes dock-to-airport, 90 minutes pre-flight buffer. Total: 5 hours 30 minutes. A 7-hour layover gives a thin margin. An 8–9 hour layover is comfortable.
Read what happens on a 3-hour cruise for the shape of a typical trip.
Layover guests are some of my favourites. They land tired, take an express train, get on the boat, and three hours later they are on a swim platform looking back at the city they had not even checked into. Then they fly out. The trip stays with them because there was no hotel in between to dilute it.
Where the boat is
We depart from Tjuvholmen, the small island at the western end of Aker Brygge. The meeting point is the dock outside Strandpromenaden 4, two minutes from The Thief hotel and three minutes from the Astrup Fearnley Museum. Look for the Cormate T28 in white with the OSE logo on the side. We are usually fuelled and ready 20 minutes before departure.
Booking confirms the meeting point with a Google Maps pin and the captain’s phone number. Save both before you land. Mobile signal is full at the dock and across the inner fjord.
